Starting a Business? Get a Digital Footprint. Today-Facebook Ads

Last Friday I attended the Women's Entrepreneurial Luncheon. There I heard about and met many women who are at different stages in starting businesses. The panel of speakers recommended several things that relate to technology use. They mentioned knowing both Excel and Powerpoint especially in terms of communicating with Lenders about the plans for the business. They talked about the importance of having a professional looking website and an online presence. Facebook, Twitter and reading blogs were mentioned. It really emphasized for me how much things have changed.

So, this post will focus on Facebook Ads step by step.

I. HAVING A DIGITAL FOOTPRINT
You all know what a footprint is, but you may not have thought about having a digital footprint. This is an imprint of what people can find out about you online. If you Google my name (Janice Friesen) you can find out a lot about me. Most of it is stuff that I have intentionally put online. I recently searched for one of my customers and found out wonderful things about his life and the things he has done.

Your company digital footprint should be something that shows you in a good light and lets your customers know what you want them to know about you. Facebook is just one part of that digital foot print. You do not even need to have a personal Facebook account in order to create a business page or ad.

II. THE FIRST PLACE TO GO
There are very clear and helpful directions for how to do this in the Facebook Help Center. To get to that you go to http://facebook.com and then at the bottom of the page click on HELP. You do NOT have to log in.

III. CREATING A FACEBOOK PAGE OR AD FOR YOUR BUSINESS
You can start with a Business Page OR an Ad. A Page is a place where you can communicate to your customers about what you are doing. People can "like" your page, but it does not give them access to your private information or information about others who like the page. When anyone clicks  "LIKE", a message about your business is posted to their wall stating that they like your business. You also receive an email about their connection to you and there is a number on the page that shows how many people "like" your business.

Facebook Ads is the next step. It allows you to narrow down where you want your ads to show up, what type of people should see them and how much you want to pay for them. You fill in the form for your Ad with a picture, some text and a link to your business webpage or email. The ad will show up on people's Facebook pages as many times as you have budgeted. I set my first one up saying that I would pay $3 a click for up to $12 a day. I targeted Austin, Texas and chose that it go to everyone who was had not indicated that they "like" I'm not a Geek.com yet. Facebook regularly sent me information on how many "impressions" (how many times it showed up on a page) the Ad had and how much I was spending for clicks. I was surprised to have many people that I do not know LIKING I'm not a Geek.com and actually clicking on the ad. Now I am able to adjust the number of clicks or total amount I want to spend a day so that it better meets the business goals. You can even create an ad with a coupon that people can get by clicking the ad. I am just at the beginning of using this, so I cannot say how effective it will be. There is a very similar Ad feature in Google which will bring your ad up to the top of the search results for Google. There is so much to explore and learn!

P.S. A free addition for my faithful readers. In
honor of Talk Like a Pirate day here is a podcast done last year by some cute First Grade student-pirates.

Setting up your Facebook Profile

Your Facebook profile is important because it is what other people see when they come to your page. If you have set your privacy settings they only see what you have allowed, but the people you have given permission to will see your profile.

To get there you click on the word "profile" on the right of the top bar. Now on the top right you will have a choice to EDIT or VIEW your profile. VIEW allows you to see what other people see of your profile so that you can change your privacy settings if you want to.

When you click on Edit Profile you have the chance to change lots of things about your profile.

Basic Information-This is pretty straight forward and has your name, location and statement.

Profile Picture-This is where you can upload a picture from your computer that you want to use for your profile picture. Most people put pictures of themselves on Facebook, but you can put up any picture that you would like to represent you. You can also take a picture if you have a camera on your computer and use that. When you have uploaded a picture click on Edit thumbnail and you will be able to adjust what part of the picture shows up in your profile.

Friends and Family, Education and Work, Philosophy, Arts and Entertainment, Sports, Activities and Interests and Contact Information are all optional. You do not have to fill this all in if you do not want to. Ads on Facebook are targeted and so you will get ads that are closer to your interests if you do fill this in.

For example in my profile it says I am a teacher and so I get an ad about Autism. The ads change every time you go in.

Sometimes the ads relate to things that your friends or family "like". This means that on a page (like I'm not a geek.com) someone has clicked the hand to say that they like it. You will be notified about things your friends like because the company thinks you probably will like it also.

All of this information is optional. Some people do not like to fill it in because they do not trust Facebook or others to use the information wisely. Others put lots of information into their profile because they want visitors to know about them.

SECURITY STORY
Recently I looked at my address book and noticed that everyone who is one of my Facebook Friends now has a Facebook webpage linked to them. I was shocked. I did not put that information in there. I am sure that Facebook decided it was a fast way for me to get to my friend's profiles and so they just added them. They may have announced this somewhere, but I don't remember seeing it. It bothers me because I would not like someone writing extra stuff in my paper address book. It is private. I think of my digital address book the same way. It is spooky to know that they can access it that way.

Pros and Cons of Joining Facebook

It seems like everyone is using Facebook these days. Some people are still unsure about using it. This week each post will be about Facebook. It is not a attempt to get you to use it if you have not. I think it is good for you to make your own decision. That is why this first post talks about the pros and cons of using it.  If you have any questions or comments I hope you will add them.

INTRODUCTION TO FACEBOOK

Facebook is the largest Social Network (online program that connects people) and has around 750 million active users. Listed below are some of the features of the site:

FRIENDS
Facebook exists to connect friends to each other. When you sign up for facebook at first you do not have any friends. You have to invite people to be your friend and they have to confirm before they are added to your page and you get their status updates. Some people try for the most friends possible and 'friend' anyone that they possibly know, others only 'friend' family members. It is up to you. You can also UNFRIEND someone. This takes them off of your friend list, but they are not notified and must take notice themselves that they are no longer receiving your updates.

STATUS
When a person is logged into the site there is a box at the top where you can type a little about yourself. You can also post a picture here or link to something on the Internet. People often link to YouTube videos. Whatever you put here can only be seen by the people that you have set up in your privacy settings. When you have friends you will see a list of their status updates when you log in. When they log in, if it is near the same time you posted they will see what you wrote.

POKES
If you use the SEARCH at the top you can find people. On their page you can see what they have allowed you to see in their privacy settings, but you can also "POKE" them.  All this means is that they get a note saying that "_____ has poked you, do you want to poke them back?" If you don't have something to say to someone, but want to let them know that you have been to their page you can POKE them.

MESSAGES
Younger people tend not to do email anymore. They do Facebook. They get on and check the status messages on the front of the page. At the top there is a little red bubble with a number on it that shows what has changed since you last logged in. It indicates if you have any messages. You can then go and read them and reply. It works a lot like email.

PHOTOS
This is the largest reason that many people use Facebook. It is easy to upload photos from your computer or camera and to make them available to anyone. Again, this is something you set up in your profile. When you put a picture up on Facebook it is stored in the cloud on one of Facebook's servers. You can create albums of pictures with a maximum of 200 pictures per album. This is all free.

LIKE PAGES
Organizations or companies can start pages and instead of 'friending' them you like them. When a LIKE PAGE posts something it will go on your page and be listed in your STATUS updates, but when you post it does not go to their page. Lots of companies are asking you to "like" them on Facebook. They are hoping that this will get them more business. I'm Not a Geek has just set up a LIKE PAGE. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Im-Not-a-Geekcom/151675098246963. It has 7 friends so far! People are only allowed to have ONE Facebook page.

GROUPS
If you have a group of friends or a committee that needs a place online to share and connect you can sign up for a GROUP. A group creates a password protected space whoever created it is the Administrator and everyone else needs to be invited or request and be approved to belong.

NOTES
This is a little like a blog. You can write longer posts about anything you want and it scrolls chronologically with the newest at the top.

GIFTS
You can actually purchase (for real money) gifts for your friends on facebook. These are virtual items that cost $1.

MARKETPLACE
Facebook has targeted ads that show up on the side of your page. These ads show up depending on the location and interests of the person who is logged in. The person who creates the ad pays Facebook every time the ad is clicked.

CHAT-VIDEO CHAT
Facebook has a feature that allows you to CHAT in realtime with any of your friends that are online. Either on the right sidebar or on the bottom of the left bar it tells who is online. If you click on one of them the chat window opens at the bottom and you can type a message that will show up immediately on their page. Then they can type back. Facebook is

WORLDWIDE
Facebook is popular worldwide. When I was in Bethlehem all of the kids knew about and were using Facebook. I have friends in Turkey who post in Turkish, in the Palestinian West Bank who post in Arabic, in Mexico who post in Spanish, and even in Denmark who post in Danish

POSITIVE
There are many positive reasons for using Facebook.
  • Many people have reunited with old friends or family members.
  • It is an easy place to share photos of yourself and your family for others to see.
  • It allows people to see things about you that you may not have shared or had time to tell them. When we were recently doing a home remodel I posted pictures of the progress as it happened. I was surprised at the number of people from my work that commented on it. I have also been aware of vacations or important things that have happened to coworkers that I may not have known about and it helped build closeness.
  • It is easy to share one thing to everyone you know with one message.
NEGATIVE
  • Many people are concerned about privacy issues with Facebook. At times the company has seemed to not respect the privacy of users, but because of backlash has set up easier to use settings. Setting privacy settings in Facebook will be another post. There are many choices so that you can customize who can see which parts of your page. However, there is always concern about privacy when so much of your own content is stored on someone else's servers.
  • Another common concern is bullying. This has become quite a problem for teenagers. It is very easy to victimize someone online and make fun of their profile. Some people have also found out how to hack into others accounts.
  • An interesting and unclear topic is who owns all of the content on Facebook. Do they have the right to your information and photos or do you still own them after you have posted them there? What about when someone passes away? What happens to their profile and their page?
Much of the content of the Intro to Facebook came from Wikipedia.
